Walk Behind Power Trowels
When choosing a walk behind power trowel you must consider how big of an area you are trying to cover, the type of concrete mix, weather conditions, and if there any obstructions or narrow doorways. With the widespread acceptance of the F-number system that rates flatness, proper power toweling techniques are essential, so choosing the proper power trowel is vital. Below is a general guide for the various sizes of walk behind trowels for concrete finishing:

  • 24-inch diameter trowels: ideal for finishing around plumping pipe, edges and small doorways
  • 30-inch diameter trowels: Versatile and provides good coverage, yet compact enough to fit through doorways
  • 36-inch diameter trowels: good coverage, used on small to medium pours, all types of floors
  • 46-inch diameter trowels: large coverage, medium to large pours, all types of floors
  • 48-inch diameter trowels: large coverage, medium to large pours, all types of floors

Ride On Power Trowels
For high FF numbers, the high performance and hydraulically driven ride on power trowels are the most powerful on the market and are used on most large commercial jobs. These riders produce good horsepower-to-weight ratios for pans and will provide finishes with high FF values. Mechanical ride on trowels utilize gearboxes while Hydrostatic ride on trowels have a hydraulic system that eliminates most mechanical problems for trouble free operation.  Below is a general guide for the various sizes of ride on trowels for concrete finishing:

  • Twin 36" diameter overlapping: easiest machine to control, ideal for finishing small to medium sized floors
  • Twin 46" diameter overlapping/non-overlapping: medium to large pours; overlap machines can’t be used with pan floats
  • Twin 60" diameter non-overlapping:  large floor areas; provides highest FF numbers (flattest finishes); counter-rotational machine allows forward travel along edges and reduces overlap effect
